PHE launches Change4Life campaign around sugar in everyday food and drinks

Published:

Public Health England (PHE) is encouraging families to cut back on sugar by making simple swaps to everyday food and drinks.  This is in reponse to the fact that children in England are having around 2800 sugar cubes more than they should each year leading to weight gain, type 2 diabetes, tooth decay, heart disease and some cancers.

The Change4Life campaign focuses on the foods that children are getting most of their sugar from such as sugary drinks and confectionary, and highlights the surprising amount of sugar in everyday food and drinks.

Registered Nutritionist Kawther Hashem, Campaign lead at Action on Sugar based at Queen Mary University of London says:

“Encouraging parents to halve their children’s sugar intake from everyday food and drink products is applaudable and we fully support the campaign. However, if we are to curb the UK’s escalating childhood obesity epidemic then the government must enforce more hard-hitting tactics such as mandatory uniform coloured coded labelling on front of packs, product reformulation with a 50% reduction in sugar across all products, a tax on confectionery and ensure that only healthy products are marketed and advertised."
