Government’s ‘Good Food Cycle’ announcement outlines framework for new Food Strategy

This week initial details of the new Food Strategy were released, under the framework title of the ‘Good Food Cycle’.

Published:

The new framework defines 10 Food Strategy priority outcomes that are required to successfully build a thriving food sector whilst simultaneously tackling the challenges arising from the UK’s rising obesity rates.

Included as part of the key strategy outcomes are:

  • An improved food environment that supports healthier and more environmentally sustainable food sales.
  • Better access to safe, affordable, healthy and convenient food options.

The plan acknowledges many of the challenges faced by the UK’s food system, namely its relationship with environmental concerns, health impacts, and food security. It cites that to achieve these outcomes the strategy must place focus onto a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable model.

Whilst we applaud this new announcement and reaffirmed focus on food environments as a factor in obesity prevention, we hope this new Food Strategy will underpinned by clear, uninfluenced and preventative policies. Decisive and evidence-based actions have proven time and time again the most effective way to improve a food system, and we hope this new framework is a sign of positive and impactful things to come.

An in-depth scope of the priority outcomes and framework can be viewed on the government website.
