Early Years Nutrition: Setting the Standards for Change
Action on Salt and Sugar research findings were featured in the newly published report, ‘Early Years Nutrition: Setting the Standards for Change', and reveal the full extent to which infant food and drink products are facilitating poor nutrition and health.
This new report, led by the Fit and Healthy Childhood Cross-Party Group, shows our current dietary guidance and regulations are failing young children.
Our research revealed 92% of infant snacks contain a nutrition or health claim, contrasting to a mere 18% of such snacks qualifying as suitably low in sugar, creating misleading health associations that risk the health and wellbeing of children and families.
The report goes on to highlight how with 65% of parents expressing concern over the level of free sugars in their packaged baby breakfast items, UK legislation urgently needs to change. It calls for tougher measures, including:
- Mandatory nutrition composition standards for commercial baby and toddler food and drink products.
- Mandatory marketing and labelling standards for commercial baby food and drink products
