UK Sugar Reduction

As part of the strategy to reduce levels of childhood obesity in the UK, the government became one of the first in the world to establish a sugar reduction programme. The programme encourages the food industry to reduce levels of sugar in the products that contribute the most sugar to children's diets, by 20% by 2020. In parallel, the government took the bold step to implement a Soft Drinks Industry Levy which encourages reduced sugar content in sugar-sweetened drinks.
