Increased risk of 11 types of cancer linked to being overweight, researchers warn

Published:

The Guardian: An evidence review of more than 200 studies published in the British Medical Journal today shows that being overweight could increase the risk of a host of cancers, including those of the colon. breast, pancreas and ovary.

Jenny Rosborough, Campaign Manager and Registered Nutritionist at Action on Sugar, says: "The evidence from the review by Imperial College London is alarming and reinforces the urgent need for the Prime Minister to continue tackling the nation's obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemic as a priority for the political agenda.

Whilst there has been some headway with Public Health England’s sugar reduction programme and the pending soft drinks levy, we can’t allow Brexit to shift the attention away from what has become the biggest public health crisis facing the UK."

The Obesity Health Alliance, a coalition of over 30 organisations, says: “Obesity is a serious health concern and on top of being linked to major cancers, can also increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart and liver disease and mental health problems.

With over a quarter of adults obese and nearly one in three children overweight or obese by the time they leave primary school we need bold action to help us all make healthier choices. This is why it’s so important to introduce measures like the Soft Drinks Industry Levy, reduce sugar, saturated fat and salt from everyday foods and close loopholes to protect children from junk food marketing."
