World Health Organisation publishes report: Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity (25th Jan)

The World Health Organisation released its final report today, Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity (ECHO) which aims to address the alarming levels of childhood obesity and overweight globally. The ECHO report proposes a range of recommendations for governments aimed at reversing the rising trend of children aged under 5 years becoming overweight and obese.

The report’s six main recommendations are:

  1. Promote intake of healthy foods
  2. Promote physical activity
  3. Preconception and pregnancy care
  4. Early childhood diet and physical activity
  5. Health, nutrition and physical activity for school-age children
  6. Weight management


Jenny Rosborough, Campaign Manager and Registered Nutritionist at Action on Sugar says: “We’re pleased to see the release of the World Health Organisation’s report: Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity. The scale of the problem is devastating and a range of approaches need to be urgently implemented. We would have expected reformulation of foods and drinks high in free sugars and unhealthy fats to feature more prominently in the report, as it is one of the most important actions.”
